Item MK1851 – This is a BEAUTIFUL and RARE ….OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS ….BY CHARLES VICKERY…. TITLED “RUNNING LARGE” … depicting A MULTI-MASTED SAILING SHIP … RUNNING FULL MAST … ON A PARTLY CLOUDY, BUT VERY WINDY DAY with BREAKING WAVES. The mood of the day is expertly expressed in this highly detailed work and is the classic style of Charles Vickery (1913 – 1996 ). He was known for painting the moods of water as seen here in this dramatic scene. Charles Vickery is quoted as having said:
“All the colors of water come from the sky, because every color of that sky is reflected in that water.”
“Lake Michigan was a big source of instruction. Then I went to the East Coast and learned the same laws are in effect in the Atlantic.”
Clearly, his love of the water is expressed readily in this piece. HIS OIL ON CANVAS PIECES RARELY COME UP FOR SALE. His signature is located on the lower right corner of the canvas. The canvas measures 18″L x 24″W. The painting was originally purchased May 26, 1994. It remains in excellent condition and would make a worthy addition to any collector or nautical art connoisseur.
